Neighborhood Poll: Shut it Down

Comments

Uh-huh. *smiles and nods at the naive bloggers*
I think 99.9% of the work-stoppage participants are unemployed already.
It will be about as effective as boycotting gas stations on May 15th to "stick it to the man".
Well, it appears that we're all in agreement. I thought maybe I was just being overly cynical again. Muleshank pretty much hit the nail on the head.
Somehow...I don't see people getting too excited about this. People tend to let their voices heard, if at all, on election days.

It's pretty funny cause over at the blog supporting this "day-off" you are linked as one of the many bloggers that are "true patriots" for linking their image! har. har.

Haw haw! It's in three days, are y'all ready? Also: why a Wednesday? They could have at least made it a Monday so that the slackers can have a three days weekend.
Why a Wednesday?

Wednesday, October 17th is the 25th anniversary of Lech Welesa's Solidarity Movement being outlawed in Poland. This led to the General Strikes that shut that Country down, and brought about the end of Communist rule in Poland.

It's easy to blog, and bitch and complain about the administration, Congress, their attacks on the Constitution, how they have worsened America's standing in the world, but it is much more difficult to try and actually bring about change.

October 17th is only one day, sure. But, we certainly are not limiting a General Strike to one day. It is a START Date. If not October 17th, then we'll pick another day, and push it harder. One day is nothing but a speed-bump... A week becomes a major problem. At some point-- whether it is on October 17th, or some day in the future, the actions of the Administration, and events on the ground will coalesce, and we'll see success.

None of us involved are taking any money-- we're spending our own. We're writing letters to Unions, to Labor Organizations, to ethic-oriented organizations.
Further--

BTW-- the Iraq War is only a bit part of the many issues to which we are focusing our attention. The economy, the idiocy and inaction of Congress and the Senate on any given issue, our runaway deficits, the failing of the US Dollar, Lobbyists writing their own Legislation and buying it into Law-- pick an issue and jump aboard. For whom do our Representatives and Senators and President work? We don't care about your political affiliation. We're asking you to stand up for your OWNERSHIP of this Government of ours.

On this action, we are not partisan-- we are telling OUR Government that THEY work for US-- not the "Corporate Citizens." Here's a good question, the last time that you wrote a letter to your Congressperson, or your Senator, did you get a response that was not a form letter? As a result of your letter, do you see change being enacted? Is there new Legislation in Committee?

Have your needs been addressed? Are you doing better now than two years ago? Are you saving more or spending more? Is your neighborhood improving? What is the overall state of your community? What are the prospects for better employment for you?

We honestly do not care about political affiliations, we care about a US Government For, By and Of the PEOPLE. If you care about that, then we encourage you to jump aboard.

Fluffah, I'd be happy to remove the link of thanks to you if you so choose.

MF- While I applaud your motives, I sincerely can't see how shutting down all work environments is going to make any sort of point other than one that can be used against us in the current administration. I work in a public library, and I personally feel that any good that would come of me and my coworkers calling in sick on October 17th would be far outweighed by the harm it would do in my community. I prefer to keep my political actions local, where I feel that I can make more of a difference. You can do what you think is best on your site, leave me up or take me down. I did want to have an open discussion of your proposed plan of action on this blog thread, and that has officially been accomplished with your contributions. I appreciate the concern you have for our country, and thanks for stopping by to make your side heard.

PS- "It's easy to blog, and bitch and complain about the administration, Congress, their attacks on the Constitution, how they have worsened America's standing in the world, but it is much more difficult to try and actually bring about change." I totally agree with this statement, but when you reflect honestly on your proposed action, do you really see it having an overall positive effect? I can't say that I do, sadly. That being said, I sincerely hope that the outcome proves me wrong.
Getting back to the original question- if anyone reading this is contemplating calling in to work on Wednesday, drop a note on this thread.
