Um, this makes me really MAD, because I wrote a letter to the court one hour before I hurled myself off to the East Coast to see my father before he died. I got a letter back saying that all was well and I would receive another summons in the future. I resent the implication that I am a jury duty shirker being mailed to me on astropink cardstock. I'm going to call and yell at them on Monday. Probably, I won't actually yell because I'm a wuss, but I'll be yelling in my MIND.

LibraryThing's main developer Tim Spalding is putting a call out to librarians to create an open source classification alternative to the Dewey Decimal System. I have mixed feelings about it. I prefer Goodreads for my personal social cataloging needs, but I recognize the power of LibraryThing to be used in a more technical capacity for small, brave libraries. For example, I have heard of several zine libraries who are using LibraryThing as a type of ersatz free catalog for their patrons, and I think that it could work really well in a smaller scale like that. Open Source Classification is definitely a worthwhile project to work on, and it might be effective to test drive it on some smaller libraries and bookstores, but I can also see this going very awry if someone tried to implement it too soon. It's also a monstrous endeavor. Implementing an open source classification system would involve... 1. creating the system, and actually coming to consensus on a huge number of contentious cataloging issues. 2. changing all of the pertinent call numbers in the library catalog. 3. reshelving all of the relevant materials according to the new system. 4. educating all of the library staff on the new system. 5. educating all of the library's users on the new system. That's a LOT of work! Still, I would imagine it would be a very interesting and rewarding project to be involved with, and I'm curious to see what sorts of solutions they come up with. Clearly, there are parts of Dewey that don't make sense to people anymore, and because it isn't an open source system, we are left with relying on OCLC to make the changes eventually and hope that they do it in a way that ultimately makes things easier to find in the library.
Perhaps some listing will help to cure my tragic vox block situation.
