Um, this makes me really MAD, because I wrote a letter to the court one hour before I hurled myself off to the East Coast to see my father before he died. I got a letter back saying that all was well and I would receive another summons in the future. I resent the implication that I am a jury duty shirker being mailed to me on astropink cardstock. I'm going to call and yell at them on Monday. Probably, I won't actually yell because I'm a wuss, but I'll be yelling in my MIND.

Open Source Classification?

Heads up: Geeky Library Post to Follow

LibraryThing's main developer Tim Spalding is putting a call out to librarians to create an open source classification alternative to the Dewey Decimal System. I have mixed feelings about it. I prefer Goodreads for my personal social cataloging needs, but I recognize the power of LibraryThing to be used in a more technical capacity for small, brave libraries. For example, I have heard of several zine libraries who are using LibraryThing as a type of ersatz free catalog for their patrons, and I think that it could work really well in a smaller scale like that. Open Source Classification is definitely a worthwhile project to work on, and it might be effective to test drive it on some smaller libraries and bookstores, but I can also see this going very awry if someone tried to implement it too soon. It's also a monstrous endeavor. Implementing an open source classification system would involve... 1. creating the system, and actually coming to consensus on a huge number of contentious cataloging issues. 2. changing all of the pertinent call numbers in the library catalog. 3. reshelving all of the relevant materials according to the new system. 4. educating all of the library staff on the new system. 5. educating all of the library's users on the new system. That's a LOT of work! Still, I would imagine it would be a very interesting and rewarding project to be involved with, and I'm curious to see what sorts of solutions they come up with. Clearly, there are parts of Dewey that don't make sense to people anymore, and because it isn't an open source system, we are left with relying on OCLC to make the changes eventually and hope that they do it in a way that ultimately makes things easier to find in the library.

Perhaps some listing will help to cure my tragic vox block situation.

List #1- things happening and not happening in the general vicinity of my house

My child is at the Oregon Country Fair with a friend and her mom, not to return until Monday. The house has been semi-peaceful.
Dave is carrying in and installing aqua painted baseboards in Cleo's room
My dog is anxious
The neighbors across the way are installing a new roof, and making lots of nailgun noise (see previous bullet)
I am still having difficulty typing with my decimated left index finger, which I destroyed in an old fashioned guillotine papercutter last weekend
My desk is a disaster
My bank's website has informed me that my credit card application has been approved. Thank jeebus.
The fan is on, even though it's not actually hot here yet
Did I tell you all that I had a tantrum over the general non-workingness of my previous laptop, and proceeded to hurl myself further into debt to buy a new Macbook Pro? Newegg.com and BillMeLater: the deadly but effective combination for compulsive online shoppers. Anyhow, I love it. I can't believe I waited this long to buy a Mac. Everything just... works.

That's enough of that list.

My new Macbook Pro is rad
It's been really nice out
My recent credit card approval means that Cleo might be able to go to Camp EARS this year after all, and I might get to see my mom and family this summer without it being a sad occasion like last time
It's farmer's market day
Things are finally growing in my garden, although something is eating all of the leaves off my brussell sprouts
The new guy at work is nice, which is good, because I'll be working with him a lot
We might get a new dog soon
I finally paid off my refrigerator
I finally got around to getting my "Professional Librarian's Certificate" through the state of Washington. I applied once before right after I graduated, but they lost my application and then I totally forgot about it. It came in the mail yesterday in a fancy dark blue folder with gold stamping.
I like my job
Cleo is starting high school soon
We are most likely going to have a new president that I approve of in the near future
We had a great after hours show recently at the library with Mirah and Spectratone International performing and Britta Johnson showing her amazing stop motion animation. The show is called "Share This Place," and you should go if it's ever performed near you. I am also greatly enjoying the CD I bought at the show.
