So, yesterday my baby sister Courtney turned 36, and we went to Seattle to celebrate. I wanted her to pick some things that she'd never done before in Seattle. However, it was Pride weekend, so downtown and Queen Anne were essentially off limits unless we wanted to attend the festivities, which was not a top priority for the birthday girl.
We got there around 1:00, and spent a few minutes opening Courtney's present and obsessing over how great it was. By the time we finished that activity, we were all right famished. We set out for our destination.
Adventure agenda item #1- Georgia's Greek Restaurant in Ballard
Our first stop was Georgia's Greek Restaurant in Seattle, where I immediately shilled Courtney by declaring her birthday to the staff. Our water boy didn't much seem to care about Courtney's birthday, but she received effusive birthday wishes from the waitress, and at the end of the meal the owner gave her a free piece of baklava, which we will hereby refer to as birthday success number one. Food was heartily enjoyed by all, flaming cheese was consumed, Greek cookies were purchased for later, and then we were ready to move on to the next stage of our adventure.
Adventure agenda item #2- the Museum of History and Industry
The Museum of History and Industry, aka the MOHAI, is where the fun really began. I shilled Courtney's birthday once again, and she got into the museum for free. Dave and Jeff proceeded to ditch us post haste, as if they suspected that we might embarrass them at the museum. We proceeded to take a series of pictures while basking in the history and industry that surrounded us.
Eventually, the janitor started sweeping around us in a passive aggressive fashion, and we knew it was time to go. The museum was closing, so off we went, to our next adventure destination.
Adventure Agenda Item #3- the Arboretum
To be honest, we just happened to be at the arboretum, so it wasn't a planned destination, but it was still pretty great. First, Cleo climbed the giant cannon...
Then we went for a leisurely stroll down the paths of the arboretum. Jeff wore Courtney's purse for a while.
We saw lilypads, which I am always excited to see...
As we walked through the paths, we noticed that they were progressively turning into mud. We decided to term the paths "the Mud Labyrinth." Courtney was wearing flip flops, so it was particularly amusing to watch her navigate the labyrinth. Eventually, it started to rain and we headed back to the car. Where was our next destination?
Adventure Agenda Item #4- Lake City!
We all wanted coffee at this point, so we headed for a strange little place called Baker's Restaurant, Sweet Parlor & Fountain. To our dismay, we got there to discover that it had somehow morphed into a quite filthy looking Chinese restaurant. Courtney was beside herself with grief, but rallied when she saw the dollar store next door. We spent some time in the dollar store, where I got some transportation stickers, Cleo got some hideous fake nails, and Courtney got a new toilet brush and some hideous red plastic champagne flutes for her friend's upcoming wedding. Again, I shilled Courtney's birthday. They offered to give Courtney a peach cigarillo, but she declined. They also informed us that people buy them often and fill them halfway with pot. They can then walk down the street smoking a joint, and the pot smell is masked by the peach aroma. You learn something new every day in Lake City.
Next, we made a brief stop in Value Village, where I snapped a family photo...
At this point, we still hadn't gotten any coffee and it was 6:57pm, so we drove for a while past cafes that were closed or closing. At last, we stopped at a chocolate shop and cafe in Greenwood called Chocolati. We all got chocolate and coffee, but unfortunately I forgot to shill Courtney's birthday at this location. Who knows what delicious treat she might have gotten?
We shuttled back to Courtney and Jeff's house at this point, where we drank our coffee and ate some chocolate and looked at "I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence" for a little while more, then it was time to end our birthday adventure and go home. On the way home, I snapped at Dave because I was really hungry and sugared up and he was playing Gogol Bordello and it was making me want to scream at that particular hypoglycemic moment, but things went relatively smoothly from that point on. When we got home, I fried two eggs and ate two rice cakes with avocado on them and went to bed. The end.
What was the one toy you wanted as a kid that your parents never bought you?

Once again, I choose not to answer the question directly. I remember getting a really kick ass set of Caran D'ache clay. My first day back at school, I came home to find that my little sister had turned about two thirds of the beautiful pure clay blocks into a giant mixed color clay pancake. I was devastated. Another time, she drew pictures of little girls being chased by monsters on nearly every page of my new autograph album. I still love her anyhow.
I also remember really wanting this knitting machine that I kept seeing on TV, and then getting it and realizing that it was incredibly lame. I recall that as the first time that I realized that advertising was manipulative.
